Notes on DW Essentials CS3
Kevin Siegel, the author of DW Essentials CS3 at IconLogic.com, has been kind enough to make the new text available to us prior to publication. I'll be downloading and distribution to the class as Kevin posts chapters.
The text is still in beta, so we will probably run into inconsistencies, typos, and errors. Help everybody out. When you spot a problem in the text, make a note here so everyone else in class knows about it. If you have a solution, add it.
If you have more general problems, add your question to the Q and A list at the bottom of the page. If you have a solution, add that.
General
- Keep in mind the distinctions between selecting IN a cell vs vs selecting the cell vs selecting the entire table. The text says "Click in cell". Click in the cell as if you were going to type in it. Use the selector buttons at the bottom of the file window to select tables and tr, etc
- There are rollover tags on buttons that can help you identify them.
- In the Layout bar, there are two different tools: one for drawing tables another for drawing cells. Watch the difference in the text.
- You need to click on the Draw Cell button each time you draw a new cell. By default, it doesn't stay selected.
to print
- Preview the page in a browser and and print it from the browser, not from within DW.
Saving and Naming
- Use filenames exactly as advised: for instance, My_Div_Me.htm
- Some lessons build on work done in previous mods, so save your files to your own flash drive.
The Text
Mod 1
- The text mentions choose Window > Workspace Layout > Designer. On Mac, use Window > Workspace Layout > Default.
- p 18. reads "Preview a page in a web browser. Press [F12] on your keyboard." On Mac, F12 might open Dashboard. Use File > Preview in Browser or the globe icon.
Mod 2
- Turn the rulers on for this module. View > Rulers > Show
- p 59. Step 1. choose Edit> Preferences. On Mac, choose Dreamweaver > Preferences
Mod 3
- On the Mac side [F12] conflicts with Mac OS X: Opens Dashboard.
- On the Mac side, F-keys F9 - F12 might conflict with F-functions in DW.
Mod 4
Mod 5
Mod 6
Mod 7
- Before step 1: There are three buttons at the bottom left of the CSS Styles panel. One looks like a bullet list, the next has A B and a down arrow on it, and the third has two ** and a down arrow. Click the third one (the one with asterisks) to show the Show only set properties. The rest of the mod should be ok.
