About

KBSU is a closed-circuit television station broadcast on the BSU campus, as well as throughout Bemidji and surrounding areas. KBSU is run completely by students, most of whom are Mass Communications majors. These students choose what programs to produce and air.

History

The University's first television station was broadcast throughout Bemidji in 1971. Broadcasting ran 24 hours a day and consisted of a black-and-white TV camera pointed at 4x6 inch file cards which advertised non-profit events hosted by BSU and the rest of the community. These cards were attached to and rotated on bicycle rims that were run by a small electric motor.

Programs

KBSU offers a variety of programs to serve its diverse audience on campus and throughout the rest of its broadcasting area.

Sporting Events(sub-head)

You can catch home games of BSU's men's and women's hockey and basketball, as well as football and volleyball on KBSU.

Performing Arts(sub-head)

Programs highlighting the fine arts, such as operas, symphonies, recitals, and plays are aired regularly.

College-Oriented Programs(sub-head)

Programs from affiliates Zilo TV and National Lampoon Network are often aired in the evenings.

Student-Produced Programs(sub-head)

KBSU also airs original programs such as variety shows and talk showsj created by BSU students. On-campus lectures and recitals can also be seen.

Get Involved

Any BSU student can produce their own program to be aired on KBSU, regardless of their major. Students wishing to learn more about producing television programs and running television stations may wish to look into the following courses:

Mass communications students also have the opportunity to get experience working in the television industry by working with Lakeland Public Television, which is also run from the BSU campus.

Students wishing to get more information about courses offered or a major in Mass Communications with a concentration in Electronic Media can visit the Mass Communications (link to http://www.bemidjistate.edu/academics/catalog/0708upcatalog/MASC/index.html) section of the BSU course catalog.
