StudentMediaGroup > TexasTechStudentMediaSiteReview
Texas Tech Student MediaTexas Tech's student media site has a global l.h. navigation with the heading "quick links." These include links to the site homepage and links to each site of the school's media outlets which are run by the Department of Student Media: the Daily Toreador (its newspaper), La Ventana (its yearbook), and KTXT-FM (its radio station). Also on the L.H. global navigation, under the heading "student media," are links to pages titled: "our staff," "History of Student Media," and "who we are." The "Our Staff" link brings the user to a page that lists the names and titles of some of the student media staff, as well as their contact information, including their email addresses and phone numbers. The "History of Student Media" link brings the user to a page which gives a history of all three of the student media publications at Texas Tech University. The "Who We Are" link uses a hover menu, which allows the user to choose which publication they would like to learn about. When one is clicked, it brings the user to a page which gives a short history of the publication, as well as information about the staff and what information is included in their publications. There is also an "about" section at the top of the content portion of the site's homepage, with links to the same places as the "who we are" section of the L.H. global navigation. What I liked about this site was that it included both links to the sites of and information about its student media publications. I also liked that it has a search bar (that seems to work) at the top of its sidebar navigation, which I didn't mention before. I would like to be distinguished from this group by having both the information about and links to the sites available to our users, but I think I would rather have the links to the sites on the information pages themselves. Also by the content, it doesn't seem like the site is directed towards the students. For example, the language that's used under the heading, "Operating Philosophy," on the homepage of the site doesn't seem to be aimed at students: Texas Tech University recognizes and affirms the editorial independence and press freedom of all student-edited campus media. Student editors/managers have the authority to make all content decisions; consequently, they bear the responsibility for the decisions they make.
Texas Tech University believes an independent, robust student press is a basic right in a free and democratic society and necessary for a full and vigorous freedom of expression as well as proper growth and development of students as socially responsible journalists and individuals. It also believes such a student press serves the campus community best. Student journalists/broadcasters should pursue their vitally important tasks within an environment conducive to growth and development and, to that end, the university has assigned responsibility for creating such an environment to the Department of Student Media through the Student Media Committee.
Within this context, the Student Media Committee and the Department of Student Media develop policies and programs to assure adequate financial support for The Daily Toreador, La Ventana and KTXT-FM to relieve student editors and station managers of many non-editorial/non-broadcast business matters; to provide student editors/station managers readily available, competent advice and counsel concerning their ethical and legal responsibilities and other professional matters; and to promote on campus an understanding and continuing commitment to student freedom of the press.
