  • Began in mid 1960's
  • Students constructed an AM carries in a dorm room and broadcat news and music throughout the campus
  • KDRS - Dorm Room Station
  • funded by Student Activities Committee
  • strictly student facility
  • Kris Geisen (student - 1967) was hired as BSU's director of audiovisual services
  • Geisen applied for FM license
  • FCC granted the license in 1969 - this was the first FM licensed station north of Brainerd
  • Switching to FM extended the radio service from the campus to most of Bemidji
  • 1970 - 10 watt station went on air from studio in the basemennt of Birch Hall
  • Geisen was reassigned from audiovisual services to director of broadcasting under University President Robert Decker.
  • As interest in potential of broadcasting grew, Decker and others in the administration looked into development of an academic program in the area
  • 1969, John DeSanto was hired to begin a communication media department
  • Because of interest in the current student run TV and radio stations, the courses expanded rapidly, and mass comm instructors began offering courses in photography, television, and media through the ed department.
  • In 1975, audiovisual services and the comm media dept. combined into a communication major.
  • TV and Radio stations then moved to Deputy Hall, along with Northern Student
  • The comm program continued to flourish, and the radio station increased its power to 130 watts, and converted to stereo
  • Since then, the TV and radio facilities have continually upgraded their equipment and facilities since the move to Deputy Hall.
  • Radio station has acquired new digital video-editing equipment
