FAQ

The esteemed meteorologists from Great Lakes Weather Service have agreed to answer questions for a FAQ page. I've compiled the following questions. If you have a great question feel free to add to the list.

What time(s) of the year does the aurora borealis most often occur? Why is it strongest then?

What causes the aurora?

At what altitudes does the aurora take place?

Why does the aurora typically have a green color in northern Minnesota? What causes other colors to occur?

What would happen if we had no magnetic field to sheild us from geomagnetic storms?

When is the peak of the next sunspot cycle? Will the aurora be greater at the peak of this cycle?

How fast does the solar wind typically travel? Does greater solar wind speed equal more spectacular aurora borealis?

What's the most outrageous claim or old wive's tale you've heard about the aurora?

Explorers and eskimoes have written and spoken of sounds such as hissing and cracking created by the aurora. It there any scientific evidence to suggest the aurora is capable of creating such noise? JeppeBundgaard
