Preparing images for WCW

Some specs

  • absolute max image width = 700 px. 500 - 600 px is better. See Lynch on page dimensions
    • column size is proportionally less.
  • max file upload size = 100k (to check)
  • max resolution on the web = 72 dpi
  • Scan for the web at 72 dpi.

File management

Typically, images need to be cropped, re-sized, and compressed for the page. The trick is to work on the original image, but save the cropped and compressed image as a new file in a new folder. Upload only the prepared and compressed image to the server.

Plan the width and placement of images on the page, and how you'll use them, before you begin. You may want to review Placing Images. Placing images in tables can be particularly tricky, so be prepared for trial and error.

to do Prepare a Tips for Placing Images? page.

Prepare the image

  1. Open image in Photoshop Elements.
  2. Crop the image to focus on the visual element.
  3. Adjust brightness and contrast as necessary.
  4. Resize by selecting Image > Resize ... (Images can be resized in the Save for Web dialogue box, as well).
  5. Compress the image by selecting Save for Web...
  6. Choose format, changes in size.
  7. Click Save.
  8. Give the file a memorable and descriptive name. Alphanumeric characters. No spaces. The file name will end in .jpg.
  9. Save it to your own drive.

Once you have images saved to your drive, go to the page you want to attach them and use the Attach: function to upload and place them.
