What is Facebook? Ask the Washington Post.

The Good Stuff

Facebook provides many great opportunities for networking between students in a college or university. You can meet people through classes, parties, interests, and majors. It lets you know what's happening around campus through event invitations and announcements. Facebook will tell you when your friends' birthdays are coming. With unlimited photo uploading, you can share all your pictures with your friends. Also, it allows you to tag photos with real names so you know who's in which picture. There are interconnections between people's profiles, so you can see the social web in action. You can meet new people and new love interests. It allows you various ways to contact people--sending messages, writing on walls, etc. You can share as much or as little information about yourself as you want; you can post your home address or even keep your profile private and unviewable to anybody except your friends.

Remember:

Stay safe.

Make friends.

Have fun!

The Bad Stuff

Students have been caught drinking illegally. Have been evicted from their dorms due to activities advertised on Facebook. Many, MANY people have been caught cheating on their boyfriends, girlfriends, or academics. You have no control over other people posting photos of you, and your name is almost always linked to your picture, so your identity is undeniable. People can use the information you post to find you or use it against you. It's a major tool for procrastination. The main focus is not on academics, but instead on relationships developed through drinking, partying, and sex.

How to Avoid the Bad Stuff

  • Remember that anything that you post becomes public knowledge.
  • Budget your time--midterms do take precedence over Facebook browsing.
  • Don't post pictures of yourself drinking if you are underage or in the dorms while doing so.
  • If you don't want people to contact you using the information that you post, don't post it. This includes things like cell phone numbers, home phone numbers, home addresses, etc.
  • Having the most Facebook friends is not the most important thing in your life.
