Wikipedia at the university
Wikipededia is great for quick look-ups and fast reference. For the most part, it's accurate - although you should always double-check the facts before staking your reputation on it. And it's pretty detailed and current, especially on pop culture entries. But it's an encyclopedia, and, like all encyclopedias, it's not generally used in formal writing at the university. Alan Liu, UC Santa Barbara, has written a good policy concerning The Appropriate Use of Wikipedia. Have a look at it to get a sense of the issues.
Use Wikipedia to get some background info, and be sure to double-check the facts to make sure they are accurate. But before you use it as a source for a paper, check with your instructor. And to avoid plagiarism, be sure to cite your use.
