How future students are viewed (roles cast) PARENTS/FAMILY: Attendence message STUDENTS: variety, interaction, exploring, learning Menu - things you would need to enroll: academics, housing, visits to campus, demographics shown (% male/female, countries, etc.) Play to small campus (7,600 enrolled) - FORMAL: big enough for opportunities, small enough for personal attention - INFORMAL: quotes from current students Enterance requirements (ACT or SAT, FAFSA, etc.), then housing, then... - it's in sequence, and it plays to the new student as being responsible (applying for financial aid, housing...) -- Paternal sounding, though--make sure you do X and Y and Z, do it in order... Imperatives used - "should be," "must," "you can then..." Shift in tone from imperative to a sales pitch when viewing top 5 reasons to consider MSU It says it is what they students say about MSU, but it is really lip service - read the info under the subheading...It is really slanted toward what the organization wants you to know, and much of it plays to the parents, not the students. Also, the information is often geared toward showing students the fun, interactive aspect of the area, not strictly the school LOOK FOR PATTERNS Information could be presented neutrally, but it is always slanted--look for rhetorical significance in the tone/verbs used Look for obverse in statements (i.e., if they say they are the best at something, are they really saying if you don't agree, you're making a mistake?) Reoccuring role: You are new, and you want this experience... READ CHAPTER SIX - MAKE NOTES TO PRESENT WITH (5 Minutes, or so) PHRASES AND BLURBS TO INTERPRET:
