Saint Cloud State University - English Department

The header contains navigation to other pages within the St. Cloud State University's website, including; Home, News, Academics, Sports, Library, Registration, Contact SCSU, and Directories/Search. The header also contains a small logo, to the right, with the words Linguistics Literature Writing Teaching. This appears to be there motto or catchphrase, much like Bemidji State University's; The Lake, The Learning, The Life. The main page of the English Department begins with information about the department, including; name and contact information for the chair of the department and secretaries. The bulk of the page is the department's mission statement. Left side of the page consists of a navigation sidebar with links to other English Deparment pages and the home page for SCSU. Some links within the English Department are; Academic Programs, TESL Program (Teaching English as a Second Language - you either know, look at mission statement, or click to find out), Intensive English Center, English 191, Faculty, Internships, Scholarships, Student Organizations, Publications, and External Review, with the home link at the bottom of the list. The bottom of this page has a small section labeled: Resources and Services. This is the contact information for The Write Place, "Anyone is welcome to visit the Write Place for help with any writing they are working on.) Below this are links to; LEO: Literacy Education Online, SCSU Library, Web CT, Career Services, and Husky Net. Further down the page contains even more contact information for the English Department and the Copyright information for this page. They also use ethos in the design of the page. The page is constructed in a professional way and the logo and motto at the top right add to its credibility. (Straightforward page, designed to get information to the English Students (and prospective English Students) of SCSU.)

Apple - ipod

Top of this page contains a large banner/header with pictures of four different ipods. Each ipod has a picture depicting features of the ipod; music videos, photo library, Hit TV show (Lost), music video (Bono from U2). Below this image is a short paragraph beginning, "Witness the evolution of the revolution." This paragraph describes the evolution of ipods and ends, "the new ipod is music to your eyes." This page is focussed on highlighting the features of the new ipod. They make claims such as, "the word's best music player" and "Now you can put all your music in your pocket and still have room for, well, practically everything else." The word everything is a hyperlink to a page with an image of the ipod menu. The right side of the page contains a navigation sidebar, topped with a "buy now" section with the option to buy online 24 hours a day, an 800 number to call, or the option to hunt for an Apple store near you. Throughout the text of the page there are images of the ipod and a picture of Bono from U2. The text also contains a numbered, footnote feature. The number coincide with a list at the bottom of the site. These numbers provide a more detailed description of certain features of the ipod. The right sidebar contains even more of the ipod's features. The bulk of the page focusses on the features of the new ipod, many features are repeated over and over again. Some features listed include; size, song capacity, display dimensions, battery life, video capacity, comaptibility, and docking ability. Many features are worded carefully, with qualifications like "holds up to". There are quite a few links throughout the text of the page. Some of these links further explain a word within the text, such as; sync and dock. Bottom of the page contains copyright information for the site. This site has a major appeal to pathos. The new ipod is smaller, has more features, better storage and is even better than the old one. With bold claims of superiority the makers of this page are appealing to the publics need to have the best gadgets. They use images of famous TV shows and musicians to boost their ethos/credibility. An arguement could also be made as to the logos appeal of this page. This product is better than all of the older versions and is being offered at, what they consider, a reasonable price. It makes sense to deduce this product is a "good buy." (Designed to sell, sell, sell!)
