Parameters for the paper: 20 April, 2008
Work on your project every day - taking reading notes, then planning, organizing, and writing the draft. Much of this work needs to be done on your own, between our class meetings. I'll be available during class time even if we don't meet, either in HS 109, or my office, HS 314, or by email and twitter.
Do your note-taking and drafting on the wiki. All of it counts towards your final grade for the project.
Before accepting your paper for credit, I must see your working bibliography, your set of reading notes, and the draft that was revised.

- Minimum of five written sources referenced in the paper itself: books / articles (Alfano and O'Brien counts).
- 7 - 10 pages: 1750 - 2500 words
- Use of and connection with visual rhetoric
- Works Cited page in MLA style

- Crunch Time: If you've developed a bibliography, located and have your sources, and have been taking reading notes, you're probably ok. If you haven't done these exercises, decide whether you want to see the course through or repeat it in summer or fall.

Weds 30 Apr
- first draft due. If you don't have a draft, you will not be commenting on others' and you won't receive comments. Your grade is at risk.

- Over the weekend, revise your draft, referring to the PeerReviewOfResearchDraft1 page and the feedback you received. The draft for Monday should be ready for a second reading.

- You might want to exchange drafts again, using the PeerReviewOfResearchDraft1. Focus especially on organization and correct citation.
Reasons for returning the paper to you for polish or change. Use this as a final revision / proofreading checklist.

- lack of or incorrect Works Cited page
- length: too short
- possible plagiarism: use of words, concepts, ideas, facts, images without citation.
- language (syntax, usage, spelling, punctuation, paragraphing) not up to university standards
- lack of a draft, bibliography page, and reading notes.

- last day of class
- polishing the paper: common problems
- Final review: Exchange drafts again, using the PeerReviewOfResearchDraft1, focusing this time on proofing and editing.
Mon 12 May
- Paper due: 12:00 noon. Print out and deliver to HS 314.
- If I have any questions, I will try to be in touch with you by 15 May.
some notes on plans
Google is not a source. It's a search engine.
Encyclopedias and dictionaries are generally not quotable sources in university level papers. Use them for your background knowledge.
If you're concerned that there is not enough info available, brainstorm some more specific sources.
You will need print sources for this project.

Consider what you might look for or find?
Try to get specific: mag articles from what kind of mags about what?
The audience is adult. So focus on sophisticated and arguable ideas rather than reviewing "facts."
Formatting
Use the headings.
Break out your hypothesis in its own paragraph so to emphasize it and so we can both see it clearly.
Proposals and plans are persuasive documents: They are aimed at persuading the reader - me - that the project is worth pursuing and that you’re ready to pursue it.
